The first thing every driver sees

Jan Hansen Transport is a transport company based in Holsted, Denmark. Its building works hard: Numbered loading doors, a wide concrete yard, a black warehouse with the company name in white above the doors.

But for a company that lives on the road, the building is also the business card. It is the first thing a driver sees when they pull into the yard, and the first thing a customer sees when they come by to talk about a job.

The office block at the front now has a face worth arriving at. It is wrapped in warm brown slats on both floors, right around the corner.

The brown on this building

A wood facade without a maintenance plan

A business building has to look as good in year ten as it did on day one, and nobody wants facade upkeep on the to-do list. Ordinary timber cannot promise that. It needs sanding and staining, and boards warp.

Aluwood is built the other way round. The slats are thermally treated Nordic pine, heated above 212°C so they resist rot, fungus and insects. Behind them, an aluminum backing holds every slat straight, so the lines stay crisp. There is nothing to maintain — oil it once a year only if you want to keep the original brown, or let it weather to silver-gray.

The install suits a working yard, too. The panels arrived on pallets, ready to fit, and went up from a lift onto battens over a weather membrane. A quicker, simpler install means fewer billable hours on site.

Warm wood against black, from a long way off

Today the building reads from across the fields. Black window frames and a black roof edge make the brown look even warmer, and up close there is real grain, the odd knot, and a deep shadow line between every slat.

It is still a transport building, with its loading doors and its yard. It just looks like a company that takes care of things.

If your own building is mostly doors and yard, maybe the office is the place to start. A sample is the easiest way to see the brown in your own light.

Aluwood, on your building

Offices, workshops, garages and garden walls. Aluwood gives them the warmth of wood, without putting upkeep on anyone's to-do list.
