The wall that opens: where a whole terrace hides its clutter

In this story

From the deck, this terrace has one calm black wall behind an outdoor kitchen. Slide part of it aside, and the everyday things a terrace runs on — towels, linen, a folding chair — are stored right behind it.

Where it started

Before, this stretch of the house was white-painted boards, the same as the rest of the facade.

Slide it open

Slide the slatted sections aside, and two openings appear: one with room for a folding chair, one with shelves of towels and linen. The kitchen next to them stays exactly where it is.

What's behind it

Wire shelves with folded linen, stacked towels and a bathrobe, a step from the terrace. Slide the section back, and all of it disappears behind the slats.

Clad in black Aluwood

Closed, the whole stretch reads as one surface: narrow black slats from the eave down to the terrace, behind the kitchen and across the storage alike. That's the trick. The storage doesn't look like storage.

The wall is clad in Aluwood in black. Aluwood is WoodUpp's outdoor panel for facades and terrace walls, made in Scandinavia for Nordic weather. Black comes in two versions: Thermowood, which is thermally treated Nordic pine, and Alu, aluminum slats with a wood-like finish. The sliding sections are a custom build, made for this terrace.
